John and Rebecca Moores Professor of History and Chair of the Department, University of Houston, Houston, Texas.
Received Ph.D. from UCLA in 1970. Has published five books and 57 articles. Winner of two national prizes from the American Historical Association, in 1975 and 2004, for article and book of the year. Distinguished Scholar, National School of Anthropology and History, Mexico City, in 1998 and Davis Fellow, Center for Advanced Historical Studies, Princeton University 1991.. Winner of over a dozen book of the year awards from divisions of the Latin American Studies Association. Has a half dozen books and articles written about him including the New York Times, Pravda (Slovenia), and La Reforma in Mexico City.
