After 35 Years, G is retiring

The following story ran in the November 17 issue of The News-Herald

Franklin teacher's years of service are a notable performance
By SHEILA BOUGHNER

Retiring music teacher Doran Gilhousen admits that "It will be a tough day when I walk out of here.

Some songs don't really end.

They hover like ghost music in the sudden silence after the final note.

Franklin High School might well echo with similar sounds when choral director Doran Gilhousen retires in January after 35 years.

But "now is the time," he said.

"No one is irreplaceable. I would rather leave when people say, 'Oh, you're leaving," rather than, 'Oh, you're still here," he said.

It will not be easy, however.

"It will be a tough day when I walk out of here," he admitted.

"I am just so thankful for 35 years of doing a job I absolutely love. The hardest thing will be not being around the kids anymore," he said.

"Most teachers have a student for one, possibly two years, but I have most of them for six years. It has been like a family," he said.

Gilhousen joined the district in January 1973, replacing Leah Sawyer. He spent two days a week at Polk Elementary School and three days at the middle school. But in 1974, Mike Judy departed as choral director at the high school and passed the baton to Gilhousen.

Since that time, Gilhousen has taught seventh grade choir, eighth grade choir, concert choir, madrigal choir, music appreciation and music theory.

Rather than tests, hi
