| About Me | My friend Dan and his wife Karen asked me to come and teach welding classes for their art project (been doing projects with Dan for years) in Oakland... http://blog.wired.com/underwire/2007/08/crude-awakening.html So I started coming out every other week or so and teaching folks how to weld. About a month and a half later Dan asked me if I would help him manage the project because it is too much for one person to do, so I threw myself into this with my usual gusto and got the team focused and dialed... 5 weeks later, it becomes apparent that Dan needs to go out to the Playa to build with the tower crew and set up the figures... So I stay behind for the next two weeks load 8 Semi-trucks with 100 tons of steel sculptures, 45,000 lbs. of wood, two generators, and walk in refrigerator/freezer, and entire restaurant's' kitchen equipment, enough food to feed 250 people for three weeks, a crane, three Cushmans (those little police cars the traffic cops drive around), 150 peoples camping gear, 8 x 300 gallon water tanks (there is no water in the desert), three crates full of lighting gear, and a trailer (for myself)... I finally get to the Playa just when they are setting the tower on the ground... These videos will give you an idea of the size and scope of the project I did at this years Burning Man: Here are sculptures and the tower in the daytime... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7ACo6VWD-k Here are the sculptures on fire at night... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBRcapvP3yA Danya and Joey ( the Pyrokenetics guys I went to Robodock with) and a look at the warehouse.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eja4dmDkJ_Q The Playa is prone to occasional duststorms, here's one from the top of the tower... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMQxgCgusJE A perspective from inside the tower... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaYM9k8lJA8 The figures with our Telsa coil... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aae2S2NxBLw A nice shot of the fireball and the tower falling... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nj3mWMdv978 Here's the whole piece, Fireworks and all... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWGx0PhDGlU So then I spend two weeks in the desert cleaning up all the Figures and our camp. I send 8 Semi trucks back, get the thumbs up from the Burning Man Org. to leave because I managed to get everything off the Playa and the entire site cleaned down to its normally pristine state with two days to spare, Drive back to Oakland, sleep for 6 hours and then... I fly to this Fire Arts and robotics festival in Amsterdam called Robodock... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdmpKs6OkuU And was the head of security for SRL... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBy5gAICARY who make many large robots bent on destroying each other including a V1 rocket... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvdOeVqH7m4 alot of my friends from the Bay area were there including the Flaming Lotus Girls and their "Serpent Mother" project... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0Xw_j44cyE The guys I went to Robodock with only have a few short clips in other videos, but here is one of the Fire Pendulum in action at Burning Man so ya get an Idea of what it d...(read more) |
