About | Barnegat - John Allen Bourhis, 89, of Barnegat, formerly of Saddle Brook, passed away on May 7, 2021. He was the son of French immigrants Pierre and Elisa Bourhis, proudly born on the Fourth of July, 1931. Growing up he was active in sports at Lodi High School, playing baseball and basketball. John was a United States Navy veteran and served his country on the USS Salisbury Sound in the Korean War. After marrying his high school sweetheart, who he met in English class when they were 16, they moved to Saddle Brook and started a family. John was very involved in Saddle Brook youth athletics including Little League, Babe Ruth and Stan Musial baseball and served as Commissioner of Saddle Brook Summer Recreation and Intramural Basketball League for a number of years. He received a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from Fairleigh Dickinson University and his Master's in Electrical Engineering from New York University. He supervised a team involved with the Apollo mission that culminated in the first men to walk on the moon in 1969. Before retiring twenty-four years ago, he was a teacher at Fort Lee High School, where he taught physics, math and chemistry and served as department chair. He was formerly a parishioner of St. Philip the Apostle R.C. Church. He was also one of the greatest Dodgers fans of all time and his credo was "Any ice cream is good ice cream." Beloved husband of Marilyn (nee Scandariato). Devoted father of Ellen Nolan and husband David, John Bourhis and wife Marielena. Loving grandfather of grandson Kelly Nolan, and granddaughters Hilary Nolan, Shannon Kawajiri and husband Masahiro, and Tara Bourhis. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral on Wednesday, 10:00 AM at Santangelo Funeral Home, 300 Main St., Lodi, then to St. Philip the Apostle R.C. Church for an 11:00 AM Funeral Mass. Interment at St. Nicholas Cemetery, Lodi. Visitation Tuesday 4:00-8:00 pm. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. |
