About Me | Once, in an assembly of some sort, (I can't pinpoint the event) there was a script regarding what would become of each of us in the future. My future had something to do with my aquiring sudden wealth. When asked what I would do with the money, I responded that I would buy an extreme number of fancy underwear and that I would probably spend the rest foolishly. It was funny but I never "got it" At any rate the fanciest underwear I have ever afforded is FRUIT OF THE LOOM. There were times when they became worn and tattered, and, of course years when I didn't bother to wear underwear at all. I am comfortable but not wealthy financially (I would have spent the rest foolishly), but I have aquired rich experience and a treasure of understanding that I would not trade with the wealthiest person in the world. My wealth was not gained quiickly but over a lifetime of fanciful adventure, some deliberate, much quixotic and a fair share induced by forces of tribulation. The summer after graduation in 1963, my family moved to Indiana and I went to Chicago to attend DeVry and Completed a Certified Electronics Technician course through the summer. In September, 63 I joined the US Army for 5 years, I was sent to Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA to learn Russian this was followed by two tours in Vietnam and a year as a patient in Army Hospitals. After the Army, I rode motorcycles, worked as a photographer and did drugs for a couple years. Then I got married and pregnant. I held a series of jobs that included labor in a brass mill and selling pots and pans This was enough to send me running back to school. I went to an electronics tech school in Denver on the GI Bill. Then the VA upgraded my disability and tested me and sent me to Florida Institute of Technology. I earned my AS in Oceanographic Technology and more but a third child shortened my efforts and I left before receiving a BS. I worked for a division of Time-Warner as Service Manager to the Western US in their pay television operation. After that I worked for Micanopy Group as a Regional Manager in their CATV operation in Florida. Following a divorce, I resigned and played music for a while. I attended Denver Community College, studying Drawing, Design, Voice, Piano and Airbrush. I worked during that time as a representative of the Hughes Dulcimer Company. I tought folk music workshops and folk instrument building classes, becoming a Jaw harp and balalaika expert. I also spent months on the road at bluegrass and folk festivals. During and after that job, I took up song writing and performing, moving around and living, sometimes not very well, off the land. In order to support my music habit I held various jobs; Cowhand, Test driver, Lineman and equipment operator for utility construction, Airport hanger construction, roustabout, Foreman in a rock mine, Oilfield truck driver. In 1983, I returned to Ohio for a while, where I worked for three months in the same steel mill where my father had been a foreman. After that I drove over-the-road, hauling swinging meat and refrigerated goods. This lasted until 1988, when my ex wife became seriously ill and I assumed the responsibility of my five children. Raising kids and OTR driving was not compatible. I returned to school at Emily Griffith in Denver and upgraded and refreshed my electronics background and learned computer programming and maintenance. I went to work then as a System Administrator for Flex Bon Paint Company, a manufacturer, in Fort Myers, Florida. During the next four years, I was promoted to Director of Information Systems. In 1994 I joined an old college friend as a partner at Hydrospace Technical Services and dived (literally) into a number of consulting projects. We moved onto our sailboat, as most of our contract work was in the Florida Keys and the Bahamas area Then I became ill. After many tests and a short hospital stay, I was diagnosed with aggressive Multiple Myeloma caused by Agent Orange exposure in Vietnam. My bone marrow was 85% tumor. The Hematologist suggested a Bone Marrow Transplant. This turned into a Stem Cell Transplant and I spent my 50th birthday in the transplant unit of Audie Murphy Memorial VA Hospital in San Antonio. In 2001 I relapsed and viewed the 9-11-2001 attack from the transplant unit. My second transplant has been followed by a roller-coaster of health with chemo followed by periods of remission. During this time I have focused on volunteer work and have returned to music performance and recording. During 2004 we performed 156 shows In 2005 we recorded an album and I won ASCAP awards both years. We have a small ranch in Texas where we raised goats, chickens and Donkeys, but rented it out and moved to Denver in 2007 so that I could live closer to VA Doctors. When I was diagnosed with MM, my chances didn't look so good, so I made a "Bucket List", although I had never heard the term. Now I suspect that my bucket has a hole in it. I just have not been able to fill it up. I keep adding new things, marvelling at my survival of 16 1/2 years, so far. My latest addition to the bucket is the 50th class reunion. Things see...(read more) |
