Obituary for Sharon Ann Seekamp Cloney
With great sadness, we announce the passing of Sharon Ann Seekamp Cloney, 82. Sharon passed away on February 6, 2026, in Richmond, VA after a lengthy and courageous battle against breast cancer. She was born in Detroit, MI, to Henry and Leona (Frederick) Seekamp and grew up in Dearborn.

After graduating from Fordson High School in 1961, Sharon pursued her bachelor’s degree in early childhood education at Muskingum University. In 1965, she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Education. She began her teaching career in the Portage school district. A short time later, she moved back to Dearborn where she taught in Dearborn Heights. During this time, Sharon also attended the University of Michigan. She earned her master’s degree in education and graduated with the Class of 1973.

The majority of Sharon’s career was spent teaching in Dearborn Public Schools. She taught at Salina Elementary School until transferring to Haigh Elementary School. She was an early adopter of new classroom technology and was one of few teachers in the state trained in the WICAT program. She taught in the computer lab as well as 4th grade. She once described running her classroom as a “tight ship”, but she was also known for going beyond the curriculum to ensure that learning was equitable and enjoyable for all her students. In 2001, Sharon was honored by Dearborn Public School District as Elementary Teacher of the Year. In a district of over 1,000 teachers, this was an honor of great distinction. Sharon retired from teaching in 2002.

Sharon and her husband, Patrick Cloney, were married on August 12, 1967. They met as children during summers spent as neighbors in Long Lake, MI. Patrick was also an educator and taught at Fordson High School. Together they raised a beautiful family and lived a modest, happy life. They truly brought out the best in each other and were married for 56 years.

Sharon had a lifelong passion for learning and travel. She participated in a German foreign exchange program in high school and traveled to Puerto Rico after graduation. These trips fostered a love for exploring the world that would stay with her throughout her life. Together with dear friends, Sharon and Pat traveled extensively across the U.S. and around the world—including Europe, South America, Canada, China, Turkey, and Russia. When she wasn’t teaching or travelling, Sharon enjoyed spending time at her cottage in Lakeside, OH. She was a member of the Lakeside Women’s Club, played bridge, dominos, participated in book club and attended educational events. Sharon was also a lifetime member of Lakeside’s Society of Old Salts. She spent many Sunday afternoons on the lake shore volunteering for the Kids Setting Sail program. Sharon was also an active volunteer for the Lakeside Heritage Society.

Sharon was involved in various organized groups in Dearborn as well. She frequently hosted friends for film club, dinner club and book club. She valued the friendships and community those groups brought to her life and always took great effort to stay in touch. She never stopped socializing, reading, listening, or learning. She enjoyed attending lectures, visiting museums, art galleries and supporting the performing arts.

Sharon was a lifelong and devoted member of Littlefield Presbyterian Church. She was baptized there, sang in the choir and was very active in their parish community for over 50 years. She recently became a member of Cherry Hill Presbyterian Church where she quickly became involved. She especially enjoyed coffee hour after services, contributing to food drives and was always gathering small items to help those in need.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Steve Seekamp, and her husband, Patrick Cloney. Sharon’s legacy of love and kindness lives on through her sons Matthew (Mione) Cloney and Sean Cloney both of Richmond, VA. Sharon is also survived by her brother Scott (Jane) Seekamp of New London, NH, her brother-in-law Mike (Marnie) Cloney of Kalamazoo, MI, her sister-in-law Ro Cloney of Mason, MI, many nieces, nephews and her cousin Bruce Meulman of Portage, MI. Sharon had many friends who became family. “Nana Sherry” will be deeply missed by Shawn (Christine) and Elliot Stevens of Issaquah, WA and by all of those who were fortunate to know her.

A funeral service will be held at Cherry Hill Presbyterian Church in Dearborn, MI on April 18th at 11:30am. A celebration of life will take place on May 16th at 2:30 following an interment ceremony at Lakeside Memorial Gardens in Lakeside, Ohio. A special thank you to Dr. Randa Loutfi, Jeanne

Gugudis and the staff of Henry Ford Fairlane Oncology for their compassionate and dedicated care.
