Ross W. Simpson
Class of 1960
Air Force, 4 Years
I was one of the first members of the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service school at AFRTS-Los Angeles in the fall of 1961. From LA I was transferred to operate a small TV station at Northeast Cape, the westernmost distant early warning [DEW] sites, on St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea, less than 100 miles from Siberia. After doing my time, 365 days and nights on the "Rock," I was posted to the television center at the Air Force Systems Command outside Washington, DC. From there, I was assigned to AFRTS-Clark in the Philippines as the evening news anchor. When my four year Robert McNamara scholarship expired in late summer 1965, I exited the Air Force and began my career in commercial broadcasting with the CBS affililate in Washington, DC.

William E. McGrew
Class of 1968
Navy, 6 Years
My service in the U.S.Navy started in Dec of 1969 in the Great Lakes Training Center in North Chicago,Illinois I spent 2.5 years going to Electronics Schools to prepare me for my job on whichever ship I was assigned .I was then assigned a ship (USS Lorraine County, LST-1177) for a short period of time until another school began in Bainbridge, Maryland for which I attended about a year and was then transferred to my last and best ship (USS Guam,, LPH- 9 ). During the 2.5 years that I was on the Guam will were the Main ship that was doing evaluations on the Harrier, vertical take-off and landing jet for the Marine Corp. This was a very interesting time as these planes were used for various tasks such as searching for shallow running submarines. I was discharged in Dec of 1975 and returned to civilian life a changed man.
