Favorite School Memory | Hanging out during the lunch hour at Whitten's Market, which itself became a memory many years ago. As a matter of fact nearly every place in Falls City that played a part in just my High School Years has either completely disappeared or has changed very significantly. I am sure that my Classmates would agree with me on this point. The number of actual remaining landmarks of our age can be counted on the fingers ...(read more) |
About Me | Are you sure that you wish to read all this. 1962-1965 Universal Trade School, Omaha, NE, following which I worked as a Service Station Attendent/Auto Mechanic at Schuler's D-X which was owned by my Uncle Haymond Schuler. This was my daytime job. Before he opened and after my workday there, I was also part time Janitor, Dishwasher, Cook, Cashier, and Bookkeeper at Crosstown Cafe which was at that time also the Greyhound Bus Depot. It was located North of the present day Sonic. I believe the building is now an Office. The Bus was a heavily used form of transportation between Omaha and Kansas City in the 60's and was eventually replaced by Airline travel. As far as I know there is no longer even service through Falls City. 1965-1966 Sales at Brown Shoe Fit Co., Emporia, KS store. Believe it or not One month during my 1 year tenure there I had the High Sales Total for the entire chain. I guess that I was a quick study. Apr.1966-Oct. 1969 Enlisted in the USAF, After Basic was sent to Medical Technician School, Graduated 2nd in my class AFSC 90230 and received one of four available Overseas Assignments. Sept. '66-Sept. '68 Spangdahlem AFB, Germany. While there achieved my 90250 rating, Tour was to be 3 years, but 49th TFW was transferred back to Holloman, AFB NM in 1968. Support Personnel were the last to leave and I and many other Med Techs volunteered to go to Viet Nam due to the lack of available quarters at Holloman. Four of us were all assigned to the 12th TFW, Cam Ranh Bay, RVN. (Sept. 1968-Sept. 1969). CRB was an Air Evac Staging Location and we received wounded from many Field Locations as well as many 'fresh' Casualties delivered to us by Medivac Hueys to our door. I was assigned to the ER, and we got them first. The wounded frequently outnumbered the Physicians who could be called in and it was not long before I had learned to perform procedures that most Physicians in the US are not trained to perform, i.e. Intubation, Chest Tube Insertion, Central IV Lines. When things were slow, the Techs and the Docs talked and drank coffee together. By the time I got on the 'Freedom Bird' I knew that I was never going to be content with being a 'Senior Medical Technician'. I guess that my displeasure with being assigned to a Ward at Scott AFB, IL was obvious, because they let me work in the Incoming Air Evac. Unit until I was eligible for an Early Release from Active Duty in Oct. '69. After returning home I took the College Entrance Exam, purchased a 10X50 used Mobile Home in Lincoln, Transferred into the 58th Medical Services Sq. (an Active Reserve Unit at E B Hospital, Offutt, AFB, and enrolled in classes at UNL for the second Semester 1969-70. The VA saw things differently. All this had happened too fast for them and they still thought I was on Active Duty at Scott AFB, which was exactly what they told me as I was sitting in the VA Office in Lincoln. "It was impossible to say how long it would to get things ...(read more) |
