An Ironman for Iron Families
Dear Friends and Family,In 2006 I spent a year working in Washington, D.C. stationed at the Pentagon, over the course of the year my work took me to Bethesda Naval Hospital to visit our wounded servicemen. Every four to six weeks we would see our wounded Servicemen being cared for under the excellent care of some great Doctor’s and Nurses. In each hospital room visited held America’s greatest treasure – her son’s and daughters wounded on the battlefield. As I entered each room the vast array of emotion felt was overwhelming. On one hand, I couldn’t help but feel such a deep sadness for these broken bodies lying before me, yet at the same time I was so inspired by their actions in the face of such tragedy. They simply spoke of going back to their brothers in arms. Not a single Soldier, Sailor, or Marine visited over the entire year did not believe they would continue to do their duty to help their teammates. It was truly an inspiration.One particular Marine over the course of the year inspired everyone. A sniper in Iraq had shot this Marine and the wound was a traumatic brain injury. The medical professionals at Bethesda followed the requisite protocol for brain trauma and unfortunately, this Marine was not progressing well. For the entire year, this Marine’s mother was by his side day after day. She never gave up in seeing her son thru this injury.
