About Fred Everett Pohto, 62, a lifelong resident of Fairport Harbor, died in his home surrounded by his loving family Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013.Born Nov. 5, 1951, to Robert and Viola (Makitalo) Pohto, in Painesville, Fred attended the Ohio Institute of Technology. He worked for the Lake Geauga Computer Association (LGCA) and the Newbury, Berkshire, Ledgemont and Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School Districts.Fred served on numerous committees in the Lake County area and throughout Ohio that support children and education. He was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church of Fairport Harbor Property Committee, church council, Zion's social ministry, youth group leader, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and a founding member of the Zion Praise Team.Fred dedicated his life to serving his community in many capacities, including serving as president of the Fairport Harbor School Board and board member of the Auburn Career Center. He was a member of the Finnish Heritage Museum, Fairport Harbor Historical Society, Fairport Lions Club, Harding High's Class of 1971 and Fairport Harbor School Boosters.After his courageous battle with cancer, Fred is survived by his wife of 38 years, Linda (Bochnak) Pohto; mother, Viola Pohto; daughter, Jessica Pohto; son, Eric Pohto; and grandson, Caleb Pohto. He also leaves behind his extensive extended family, all the kids who called him Dad, and close friends he considered family.He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Richard Pohto.The family is overwhelmed and grateful for the support during this emotional time.
