After high school Robert joined the U.S. Army where he served in Desert Storm and was stationed in Germany and Korea (where he met his wife Anna). After leaving the Army Robert settled in Evanston where he worked for the U.S. Post Office and became a volunteer fire fighter and EMT. In 2005 Robert responded to a structure fire with the Evanston Fire Department and entered the town home due to reports children may be inside. While searching an upstairs bedroom he and another fireman were caught in a smoke explosion which killed both of them. Robert had three children at the time of his death.
