About Richard “Scott” McLeod, Sr.
June 12, 1953-June 15, 2016
Richard “Scott” McLeod Sr. of Jacksonville had just celebrated his 63rd birthday prior to passing from ALS/Lou Gehrig’s Disease on June 15, 2016. Scott was a native of Jacksonville born June 12, 1953 to James R. and Margaret P. McLeod. He graduated from Englewood High School in 1971 and joined the Marine Corps where he served for 10 years. In 1972, he joined the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office retiring in 2005.
That same year, Scott became a lieutenant in the Medicaid Fraud Unit with the Attorney General’s office before finally retiring from public service in 2012.
Scott was faithfully committed to serving his community, often representing the Sheriff’s Office in local high-profile homicide cases during the 1990s. He was an admired JSO sergeant and all around good cop. Scott was an avid reader of the daily newspaper and during retirement was a contributor to the editorial board. He was a Fourth Degree member of the Knight’s of Columbus Bishop Larkin Council No. 4727 and actively involved in the Jacksonville Police Death Benefit Fund.
Scott is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Julie McLeod, son, Richard Scott McLeod, Jr., and his wife, Colleen McLeod, daughter, Miranda Gayle (McLeod) Graham, and her husband, Timothy Graham, eight grandchildren, Hannah, Brycen, Mason, Grace, Clara, Wyatt, Waylon, and Willie, brother Roderick “Barry” McLeod, and his mother, Margaret P. McLeod. He is preceded in death by his father, James R. McLeod, and his daughter, Amanda Marie McLeod.
Visitation will be held Monday, June 20 from 6-8 p.m. at Quinn-Shalz Funeral Home; 3600 3rd St. S., Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250. Funeral Mass will be at St. Paul’s Catholic Church of Jacksonville Beach, Tuesday, June 21 at 11:30 a.m. He will be buried at the National Cemetery at 2 p.m.
Scott, also known by Pops to family and friends, wanted it to be known that while he had ALS, the disease did not have him. He lived a full life with his loving wife always by his side. Pops’ final contribution comes in his willingness to help with the research for a cure for ALS. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Richard Scott McLeod, Sr. to the ALS Association Florida Chapter at www.alsafl.org.
