About Mary Treve Falstrom

(1943 - 2016)

Mary Treve Falstrom (née Sims), longtime resident of Torrance, CA, passed away on February 5, 2016 in a mid-air collision over the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Pedro, CA.

Mary was born in Jacksonville, Florida on October 11, 1943. She graduated from Englewood High School, Class of 1961, Jacksonville, FL.

Much of her early years were spent on horseback, riding for pleasure as well as competitive barrel racing and even in a friend's wedding. She also developed her interest in aviation at a young age watching the planes take off and land at the local airport. As a young woman, her enthusiasm for flying led her to become a stewardess for North West Airlines, a job which would take her to Seattle, Washington, where she would fly to Japan and Vietnam. While in Seattle, she also earned her pilot's license and met her first husband, Hugo Kringel, with whom she had her only child, Christopher “Chris.” Kringel. After leaving the airline industry, she found work as an executive secretary for Boeing in Seattle and later Hughes and Raytheon in Los Angeles. While living in the South Bay, she met and married Richard Falstrom, with whom she was happily married for 24 years.

Mary was an active pilot and loved flying her beloved Super Decathlon two-seater aerobatic airplane. She not only enjoyed cruising around the beautiful coastline and Catalina island but also competed in the Palms to Pines all women's air race eight times, flying from Santa Monica to Bend, Oregon. She was a member of the 99s, an international women's flying organization and the Del Amo Flyers, a local flying club. After retiring from Raytheon, she volunteered at the Western Museum of Flight at Torrance airport. She was also a member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Rancho Palos Verdes.

Her husband, Richard Falstrom, son, Christopher “Chris” Kringel and his wife, Trina, brother, Jerry Sims, step-children, Shawn and Michele, a step-granddaughter, Paige, and many friends survived her. A memorial service will be held on February 20, 2016. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze. com/obits.

Her original obituary was published in Daily Breeze, Torrance, CA, on February 19, 2016.
