About | James Marvin Mitchell, Jr. Obituary James Marvin Mitchell, Jr. March 11, 1944 - January 2, 2024 Leawood, Kansas – James “Jim” Marvin Mitchell, Jr., son of James Marvin Mitchell, Sr. and Virginia Doloris (Tritt) Mitchell, passed away on January 2, 2024, from a hemorrhagic stroke. He was born on March 11, 1944, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Jacksonville Florida. He was a resident since 1985 of Overland Park and Leawood, Kansas, and is survived by his wife Teresa Jean (Taylor) Mitchell, his son, Stephen, and his wife, Anna, grandchildren, Matthew and Emma Mitchell of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and sister, Eileen (Mitchell) Felton and her husband, Gerald Felton of Jacksonville, Florida. Memorial services will be held at Mission Road Bible Church in Prairie Village, Kansas, January 27, 2024, at 10:00 AM. An earlier “Celebration of Life” service was held in Jacksonville, FL on Friday, January 5, 2024, at Grace Community Church, formerly, Grace Bible Church, on 10938 Hood Road, South, in the Mandarin area for his relatives and friends. He attended Hogan Spring Glen Elementary School on Beach Blvd., Jacksonville, FL, through the seventh grade. He participated in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. In the seventh grade, he was awarded a good citizenship award by the Kiwanis Club of Jacksonville for his academic, personal, and community achievements. He put his faith in Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord at age 10 and was baptized in the Pottsburg Creek. He graduated from Englewood High School, grades 8-12, in 1962, where he enjoyed playing baseball and football, both for four years, for the Englewood Rams sports teams. He participated in Youth for Christ at Englewood, representing Englewood on the Bible quiz team and using his musical talents in the large city rallies. He was a member of the Junior National Honor Society, the Senior National Honor Society, the Latin Club, the Spanish Club, Student Council, Junior Class Vice President, and the Key Club, chaplain in senior year. He frequently attended “First Rams” Englewood High School reunions, suppers and lunches when he was visiting Jacksonville. “Jim” began his musical training at an early age, playing the piano. Some of his early recital performances were played at Hogan Baptist Church, where his music teacher was Mrs. McElroy, the pastor’s wife. Later he took more classical piano lessons in the music department of Jacksonville University. After attending Jacksonville University for a year following high school, he attended Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL for two years. He was drafted into military service about 1965 and chose the U.S. Navy for four years. He served as Captain’s yeoman and LPO of ship office and X Division on the USS Compass Island, an oceanography ship with many scientists from the Naval Applied Service Lab, based in Brooklyn, NY for 3 ½ years. He used his musical talent to help entertain those on his ship. He also played on a U.S. Navy baseball team. Following his military service, he returned to Jacksonville University in 1970, graduating in 1972 with a degree in finance and accounting with a minor in economics. His family attended Glendale Community Church, founded in 1936, until about 1974, where he played the piano in the Sunday services as a teen-ager, and was very involved in the youth group activities. One of his favorite group activities with the youth group was bowling, in which he excelled. He often returned for homecoming or reunions with his childhood friends from Glendale. He won three consecutive free summer camp scholarships to Camp Gilead, Polk City, FL on Lake Alfred, based on his Bible memorization record, and sponsored by the deacons of Glendale Community Church. He used his musical talent at the camp to help with the services. While at camp he enjoyed swimming, skiing, team sports like baseball, and other activities. He always made new friends at camp. Grace also founded Grace Christian School, where his future wife, Teresa Jean Taylor, was recruited from South Dakota as a teacher. He married Teresa Jean Taylor, on November 28, 1975. In 1978 he was offered a job at Nyack College and Alliance Theological Seminary in Nyack, NY as Vice President and Treasurer. By 1985, he and his wife moved to Kansas City, KS, which was about halfway between South Dakota and Jacksonville, Florida, where their families resided. He served as a Sunday School teacher and deacon at several churches over the years. “Jim” worked as an accountant and finance manager at Hanna Tire and Rubber Company in Kansas City, MO from 2008-2013. He had other positions working for Certified Public Accountants in accounting and finance jobs over the years. One of his favorite hymns was “Amazing Grace.” One of his favorite Bible verses as Colossians 3:16, “ Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your heart to the Lord.” At the time of his recent illness, he and his wife were visiting relatives and friends in Jacksonville, FL, where he was hospitalized at Baptist Hospital. Crevasse’s Simple Cremation, Inc., 8789 San Jose Blvd., Suite.302, Jacksonville, FL 32217, served the family. His parents and a sister, Virginia Ann Mitchell, predeceased him. His parents are buried at Greenlawn Cemetery on Beach Blvd., Jacksonville, FL.
