Faculty
Date of Passing Nov 23, 2016
Norman Wesley Newman, former head of the math department at Joseph Kerr Junior High School, died Nov. 23, 2016.

He helped develop and promote the Silver K award program that honors those who served others while keeping up their grade point average. The Silver K award program recently marked its 50th anniversary and is still helping students learn to serve today.

Norm left Kerr in 1970 to go to William Daylor High School, a continuation school, as a teacher and counselor. He was also the head of the budget committee for the Elk Grove Unified School District for many years. At nights he took classes at the University of San Francisco where he earned his master's degree, then became head of the Vocational Education Department until he retired in 1987.

His family said, “Norm loved music and played the trumpet as a young man. Those who knew him understood his love for the outdoors, whether it was fishing, hunting or playing golf…He had a quiet wisdom and would only speak when something needed to be said, otherwise he'd smile and listen, a very rare quality in a man. He will be deeply missed by all.”

His wife Glenna preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Ellen, daughter Lynette, son Brian, stepdaughter Christy Moustris and son-in-law Terry Caudle.

Visitation is from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10 at East Lawn Elk Grove Memorial Park & Mortuary, 9189 East Stockton Blvd. Private family graveside services will be held at a later date.
