Graduation Year Class of 1972
Date of Passing Nov 27, 2016
About Shirley Bittante, a talented artist, longtime City of Sacramento employee and passionate animal lover, died Nov. 27 of kidney failure. She was 62. Shirley had had a leg amputated several months ago due to infection, and seemed to be recovering nicely, posting a picture of her and her new artificial limb to her wide circle of friends. However, a new infection put her back in the hospital with kidney failure that she could not overcome. Born in San Francisco, the only child of Albert and Anita Bittante, Shirley moved with her family to the Sacramento area as a small child. She graduated from Elk Grove High School in 1072 and attended Sacramento State University before launching her artistic career. Shirley did graphic design for several Sacramento area firms, including the Auburn Journal and the Sacramento Union, before going to work for the city more than two decades ago. Before retiring in 2014, Shirley not only designed items for the city, such as brochures and banners, but organized city-sponsored events, including the annual Veteran's Day parade and senior citizen tours. After retirement, Shirley traveled with her husband, Terry Nipper, particularly to her favorite coastal spots such as the Monterey area and the North Coast, entertained friends with gourmet meals, played online Scrabble with some of those friends and tended her feline friends. She is survived by her mother and her husband. Services are private and her family asks that any memorials in her name be directed to the SPCA, the city animal shelter or other animal protection organizations. - Information from the Sacramento Bee
