About	Retired Navy Chief Petty Officer Greg W. Batey who grew up in Elk Grove, died Dec. 23, 2015 while visiting family in Utah. He was 81. Greg was born July 25, 1934 to Robert and Eleanor Batey. After graduating from high school in 1952, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he spent most of his career in the submarine service: USS Catfish, USS Raton, USS Tiru, USS Barbero and USS Blackfin. Following retirement in 1972, he was self-employed before he began working for Caltrans, retiring as a construction engineer. In retirement, he and his wife Carol relocated from San Diego to Las Vegas where he enjoyed boating, playing cards, golf, visiting with family and friends and attending many submarine veterans reunions. He was a member of many fraternal organizations: American Legion Post 0008, Las Vegas; Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Pleasant Grove, Utah; and Professional Engineers in California Government. He held life membership in U.S. Submarine Veterans and VFW. “Greg had a strong work ethic and was respected by all who served and worked with him,” said his family. “He will be deeply missed by all (of us) who knew him.” He had two previous marriages to Sharon Koster and Diana Conley. Besides his parents Greg was preceded in death by his sister Roberta, and three infant sons, Steven, Keith and Robert. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Carol (Chase) Batey; children Mike Batey (Lisa) and Kim Smith (Ted); six grandchildren and five stepchildren. Services were scheduled for Dec. 31 at 2 p.m. at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veterans Memorial Drive, Boulder City, NV 89005. - Information from the Elk Grove Citizen
