About	Robert (Bob) Mitchell, a fourth generation farmer in Elk Grove, died at Briarwood Care Facility in Sacramento Oct. 22, 2015 at the age of 87. Bob was born on the ranch in Elk Grove April 7, 1928 to Joseph and Gertrude Mitchell, the youngest of eight brothers and sisters. He grew up working in the hop and bean fields and milking the family dairy cows in the mid-1930s and into the ‘40s. Before he started raising his turkeys, it was common for people to hire the family for their services to New York dress small flocks of turkeys around the area. He signed his first turkey contract with Ralston Purina in 1950 and remained a grower throughout his life. Son Ken continues the turkey operation to this day, in its 66th year. His family said that Bob enjoyed fishing and hunting with friends and family and had great admiration for the environment and what it offered. He served 25 years on the Sacramento County Farm Bureau board of directors and was a member of the Elk Grove Community Planning Advisory Committee. Bob is survived by his wife Carol of 49 years; children Ken (Charlotte) Mitchell of Elk Grove and Brenda (Eric) VanDenbos of Shawnee, Kan.; and grandchildren Austin, J.C., Will, Kelly and Tyler. Services will be Friday, Nov. 13 at 11 a.m. at Herberger Family Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd. followed by a gathering at the Masonic Lodge, 9829 Waterman Road. Interment is private.
