About Catherine "Kay" (King) Alcorn, a former resident of Elk Grove died April 12, 2015 in Peoria, Ariz. She was 83 and had lived in Glendale, Ariz. for the past three years.

She was born Oct. 31, 1931 in Phoenix, Ariz. to William and Lucretia King and grew up in Elk Grove, graduating from Elk Grove High School in 1949 where she was drum majorette for the band.

In January 1950 she joined the Women's Air Force as a teletype technician and was stationed at Merced Air Force Base before spending 16 years at the Sacramento Army Signal Depot and eventually ending up at Fort Huachuca, Ariz. as a systems operator/analyst in 1967.

Kay was manager of VFW Post 9972 in Sierra Vista, Ariz. for 25 years through 1998. She was a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary serving as president, past state president and holding many positions at the national level. She was also a member of American Legion Post 52 and a 20-year member of Elk Grove chapter 109, Order of the Eastern Star.

Kay served in the Air Force during the Korean War and was a member of the Women's Veteran Memorial in Washington, D.C.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Noel J. Alcorn.

Kay is survived by her daughters Linda Ozier (Ed), Lauri Schofield (Terry), Dianna Boyd and Deborah Kalbe (Randy); 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was the sister of Carol Lee King of Elk Grove.

Funeral services were held in Sierra Vista with burial with full military honors in the Southern Arizona Veterans Cemetery. - Information from the Elk Grove Citizen and Sacramento Bee
