Graduation Year Class of 1931
Date of Passing Nov 29, 2014
About SANER, Jessie Virginia Jessie Virginia Saner passed away at her home in Ione, California on Saturday, November 29, 2014, with her family by her side. She was 101 years old. Jessie was born in Sloughhouse, California on January 14, 1913 the eldest of three children born to Frederick and Jessie (Sheldon) Grimshaw. She was the descendant and great-great granddaughter of Catherine Rhoads Sheldon and Jared Dixon Sheldon, an early pioneer family that settled in Sloughhouse. Jessie spend her childhood years at the family ranch at Sloughhouse, growing French prunes with her family and attended Wilson School on the hill across the road from the present Cosumnes River Elementary School at the corner of Kiefer Blvd. and Jackson Highway. Jessie attended Elk Grove High School and graduated in 1931. Jessie's parents purchased her a 1927 Model T Ford car to go back forth to school. This also allowed her to pick up several neighbor children and they would all make the journey to Elk Grove High School. She remembered that her father had ordered a black Model T, but it was not available. Instead they settled for the color olive green. Jessie thought was the worst color possible. But, it was transportation and it was better to have than have not. At times she would let her friends who rode with her to school drive the car to the local ice cream parlor while they were waiting for Jessie to finish up studies at school. Jessie's first job was picking hops for her neighbor across road Avelano Signorotti. The job was tedious hard work and she had to wear gloves to avoid cuts from the thorns on the hop vines. Her first pay check was for approximately $7.00. She never cashed the check and still has it to this day! In 1913 Jessie's parents brought a waterfront lot at Homewood on Lake Tahoe's west shore. She had many happy memories spending her summers in a tent with a wooden floor that was erected on the Tahoe beachfront property. In 1934 lumber was hauled on a flatbed truck from Sacramento to Homewood for their official cabin. The journey took 2 days because of poor road conditions. Jessie spent time each summer at the Tahoe cabin only missing several due to the war and a trip to Europe. She remained spending her time in Tahoe up until the age of 99 when the high altitude no longer allowed her to enjoy her beloved Lake Tahoe. Jessie's love of the Lake Tahoe area led to her great knowledge of the area which included many stories of early Tahoe spent with family and friends. They spent many adventurous days hiking around the mountains and also memories of having their mail delivered by boat. Jessie attended college in Sacramento. After graduation she was employed at California Western States Life Insurance Company. She married a Sloughhouse native, Arnold Saner, on November 11, 1939. Arnold received orders to enter the army in 1942 which postponed their family until 1945 when their first child Virginia was born followed by twins John & Janeth in 1948. The family moved to Ione in 1953 to be close to Arnold's work. Jessie went to work for the State of California at Preston School of Industry in 1954 and retiring in 1979. She worked in both the Preston Castle as well as the recent facility. Jessie spent endless hours on community service. She was a 4-H leader, one of the founding members of the Preston Castle Preservation Committee, served many years as a union representative for California State Employees Association in addition to being the secretary for the Preston Credit Union. Jessie traveled to Europe, took a horseback pack trip in the Canadian Rockies and traveled to other parts of Canada in addition to various stops throughout the Western United States. Jessie's presence was always visible at her grandson Gerald's soccer, basketball and baseball games as she was truly his biggest fan. She had tremendous generosity and never a harsh word to say about anyone. She had a long life filled with good friends, always kind, generous and loving, always willing to lend a helping hand. She will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her husband Arnold Saner, her son John, sister Sarah Saner, and brother Morse Grimshaw. She is survived by two daughters, Virginia (Frank) Costa and Janeth Landberg; grand-children, Cheryl Clark, Lisa Thomas (Patrick), Corrina Jackson (Rob), Gena Foston, Gerald Landberg, and 8 great-grandchildren. Friends and family are invited to a visitation on December 4th , 2014 from 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm at Daneri Mortuary, 415 Broadway, Jackson, California with graveside services to be held at 11:00 am on December 5, 2014 at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, 6700 21st Ave., Sacramento, California.
