About Arlene Carlisle Sharp, a native of this area and resident for many years, died May 11, 2013 just shy of her 94th birthday.

She was born in Florin on May 20, 1919 and grew up there, working in the family vineyard and quince orchard and playing alto saxophone in the high school band. She also sang and played the ukulele in a little group with her sister Laverl.

Following graduation from Elk Grove High School she attended Heald Business College in Sacramento where she met Bill Sharp in 1937 and married him in 1940.

They lived for a short time in San Francisco where he began a career with the IRS, and eventually settled on a 20-acre ranch between Florin and Elk Grove where they planted a quince orchard and tended a large vegetable and flower garden.

Mrs. Sharp kept books for the ranch as well as working in the orchard and garden, and also kept books for a local grocery store. Eventually she went to work full time managing the financials for a Sacramento advertising agency.

Following her husband’s retirement from the IRS they sold the ranch and moved to Santa Cruz in 1978. She became an active member of the Native Daughters of the Golden West and volunteered with the Dominican Hospital Auxiliary in Santa Cruz.

Mr. Sharp preceded her in death in 1993 following 53 years of marriage. She also lost her son Billy to cancer in 1999, and grandson Derek in 2002 to cystic fibrosis.

Mrs. Sharp is survived by her daughter, Linda Brodie; grandchildren Amber Brodie, Shelley Blakeley and Justin Sharp; and great-grandchildren Taylor Sharp, Brooke Sharp and Marissa Sharp.

Services are Saturday, May 18 at the Santa Cruz Mission Chapel, 1927 Ocean Street in Santa Cruz at 1:30 p.m. - Information from the Elk Grove Citizen and the Sacramento Bee
