About	Ann Smith, school nurse for the Elk Grove Unified School District for 23 years, died Jan. 28, 2013 at the age of 93, with her daughter Sandi, son-in-law Larry and granddaughter Carrie by her side. She was born June 13, 1919 in Biggs to Carrie Lou and Fredrick George Hammon and graduated from Sacramento Senior High School in 1937. She then attended Mercy College of Nursing, graduating on Aug. 22, 1940. On Feb. 25, 1941 she enlisted in the U.S. Army, and was a captain in the Army Nurses Corps, serving in New Guinea during World War II. During her Army career she received the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal and the American Defense Service Medal. She was honorably discharged Feb. 6, 1946. Mrs. Smith was hired by Isabelle Jackson to be a school nurse, and stayed in that career until retirement. On Aug. 15, 1958 she married Daryl L. Smith and the marriage lasted until his death March 18, 2001. Print Page Mrs. Smith is survived by daughter Sandi Amerson, husband Larry, granddaughter Carrie Decker, husband Steven, and great-grandson Joshua; daughter Darel Ann Carr, husband John, grandson Wayne Carr and great-grandchildren Austin and Marie; grandson Robert Carr, wife Pennie and great-grandchildren David, Jessica and Rachel. There were no services as per her request. Private military honors were Feb. 18.
