About | Hazel was born February 2, 1921 in Elk Grove, California to Guy G. and L. Elizabeth "Bess" Folks and passed away after a short illness in Carmichael at the age of 91. She was a descendent of the California pioneer families Graham and Folks who settled in the Elk Grove area in 1849 and 1853, respectively. Hazel was born on the Folks Ranch and was raised there with her sister Mary (Mauger) and brother George. She graduated from EGHS in 1938 and University of California in Berkeley in 1942; she received her secondary teaching credential from UCB in 1943. While at Berkeley, she was president of the UC Women's 'C Society' and selected to 'All California' teams in three sports. After teaching for several years at Santa Rosa High School, she joined the Red Cross and was stationed at Camp Beal. In 1947, she married Henry J. Wickert at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Sacramento. The enjoyed life in Sacramento and Marin County for several years before Henry was recalled for the Korean War and were stationed at Tongue Point Naval Station in Astoria, Oregon. They returned to 'Marvelous Marin' and lived in Greenbrae for 38 years while raising their family. She was an active volunteer in the PTA, Little League, Redwood Benchwarmers, Girl Scouts, Bargain Box, and President of Sunny Hills Junior Auxiliary. She was Vice-President and Secretary of H.J. Wickert & Company for 38 years. On February 4, 1992, exactly two years after the death of her husband Hank, she moved to Eskaton Village Carmichael. There she immersed herself in Eskaton activities, serving on committees and the Resident Council, and participating in various clubs for twenty years. Mrs. Wickert was preceded in death by her husband, brother, and sister. She is survived by her daughter Susan Wickert Jackson (Jim); son Tom Wickert; grandson Travis; and several nieces. A gathering to celebrate her love for her family, friends, and community was held on March 23, from 1-4:00 pm at Eskaton Village, 3939 Walnut Avenue, Carmichael, California. Burial was private.
