About | A lifelong resident of Sacramento, Helen was the firstborn child of Bill and Freida Leesha, and is survived by her sisters, Jane Leesha and Martha Shiro. Her brothers Bill, Fred, and Robert preceded her in death. Helen graduated from Elk Grove High School, where she met the love of her life, Al Simas, Sr. They married in 1941 and after Al's return from WW II raised six children, Kathleen Wall (Charles), Al Jr. (Barbara), Rich (Mary Just), Sharon DeMello (Joe), Tom (Karol), and Gary (Cynthia), who in turn, gave them 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren (so far!). She will also be missed by many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Helen was the center of this large family; her humor, warmth, and unconditional love for all a well known and cherished gift. A bit adventurous, Helen loved to travel, a desire met with trips to El Salvador, Guatemala, Canada, Hawaii, Washington D.C., New York, and wherever Al Sr. had a baseball game to coach. She loved the hot air balloon ride over the Napa wine country she took at the age of 70, even though the balloon landed hard, twenty miles off course! Her family gathered with former workmates from Cal-West States Life Insurance, Co. (where she retired after 35 years) and Simas Floor Co. (where she retired after 7 more years) and all of Helen's friends for a Rosary ceremony held at East Lawn Andrews & Greilich Funeral Home on Thursday, February 9 at 6 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial occurred the next day at 9:30 am at All Hallows Catholic Church. Internment followed at St. Mary's Cemetery, where she rejoined Al Sr. who died in 1996. She was our anchor and our touchstone and will be remembered with love and laughter always. - Information from the Sacramento Bee. |
