About Sgt. First Class Issac Lawson was in the California Army National Guard and was training police officers in Bagdad, Iraq when he was hit by an explosive device. He served in the U.S. Army for 11 years and was involved in the 1991 Persion Gulf War operations Desert Storm and Kuwait Liberation. He later enlisted in the California National Guard and served in the 49th Military Police Brigade based in Fairfield, California. In Iraq, Lawson's brigade trained about 135,000 Iraqi ploice officers.
He was 35 years old and was the father of three children. He had talked with his wife, Suzette, the night before he was killed. They were talking about thier daughter. "We were talking about her behavior," she recalled. He said, 'sounds like her mother!' " They laughed. Lawson told her, "Don't worry, I'll be home in a few months and I can help you with her." "Issac has a very loving, very out going personality."
A few hundred people attended Lawson's funeral and burial at the Sacramento Memorial Lawn. Nearly 70 motorcyclists from the Patriot Guard Riders also attended his memorial.
Lawson's brother-in-law, Lorenza Henderson, read a poem about Lawson's new home in heaven and friend and fellow soldier U.S.Army Sgt. Paul Modesto who worked with Lawson in Iraq gave a speech at the funeral. Paul said he an Issac often talked about the reasons soldiers are willing to go across the ocean to another country and fight a war that isn't greatly supported, "We decided the answer is simply this: 'It's courage.'
