About | Richie, 81, passed away after a short hospitalization from the result of a fall. He was born and spent most of his life in the Sacramento area. He and his wife Loretta moved to Yreka in 2006. Loretta preceded him in death in 2007. As a young man, Richie had an interesting 9 year career in baseball. He graduated from Elk Grove High School where he was a star pitcher, his jersey number was permantly retired. Richie went on to play professional baseball mostly for the Sacramento Solons of the Pacific Coast League. He was converted from pitcher to shortstop in 1948 and in 1954 batted .303 with 6 homeruns. In 1956 he was sold to the Chicago Cubs, but Hall of Famer, Ernie Banks, didn't want to give up his postion at shortstop. After a short time in Chicago, Richie finished up his career with the Los Angles Angles earning a league championship ring. His career numbers after 9 years in professional baseball were impressive; a .261 batting average with 45 homeruns in 937 games. His fielding percentage at shortstop was .964. After baseball Richie went on to retire from the City of Sacramento in a supervisiory postion. Richie loved his family and friends, hunting, fishing, and golf. He had a 6 handicap at age 72. More than his athletic prowess, Richie will always be remembered for his ready smile, his agreeable disposition, and his readiness to help anyone. Richie is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Marla and Wes Anderson of Mt. Shasta and his grandson Bryan Anderson of Watsonville. His son Gerry proceeded him in death in 1985. Contributions in his name can be made to Madrone Hospice in Yreka. A celebration of his life will be held at a future date in Sacramento.
