About Karen, a community volunteer who helped raise awareness about multiple myeloma, a cancer of plasma cells in the bone, finally surcumed to the disease after a courageous 9-year battle. She was 55, lived in Carmichael, and was surrounded by her loving family and many friends. She shared her story and mentored other patients in the myeloma program at Huntsman Cancer Center in Salt Lake City and at the Myeloma Institute in Little Rock, Arkansas. "When she was diagnosed, most people were living two or three years," her husband said. "She was thankful for new treatments. Every day was a new day, and she was always positive."
She is survived by her devoted husband Arlene Opper; her beloved daughters Alyson and Lexi, both of Carmichael; her loving mother Myrtle Clark; brother Kelly (Mary) of Palo Cedro; mother-in-law Estelle Opper; her brothers and sister-in-law, nieces, nephews and many caring friends. She was preceded in death by her father Marvin and father-in-law Sy Opper.

She was was active in many organizations, volunteering in the classroom, and involved with her daughters many sports and school activities. She earned a physical education degree at Sacramento State and worked for Lyon Real Estate and Transamerica Title. She married Arlene Opper in 1987 and reared their children at home. She was active at Shalom School and was Volunteer of the Year in 2000 and was a member of the Sports Booster Board at Sacramento County Day Scool. She was a volunteer tutor for Pro Literacy America, always caring for those who were in need. Forever a # 1 fan of the Sacramento Kings, she rarely missed a game.
