Graduation Year Class of 2001
Date of Passing Aug 21, 2005
About Sgt. Joe Nurre was a heavy equipment operator and gunner in the Army Reserve's 463rd Engineer Battalion and died in August 2005, 15 days after his 22nd birthday by a road side bomb while on a mission in Samarra, Iraq. He earned a Bronze Star, a good conduct medal, and two medals for the Global War on Terrorism.
He was the only child of Charles and Leigh Nurre and he was the Captain of the 2001 Elk Grove High School Football team. He was a dedicated athlete and would run three miles from his Wilton home to his campus, his former coach, Dave Hoskins, recalled. He was enrolled at California State University when he was called for duty, shortly after the Iraq War began.
On May 10, 2010 at the Elk Grove High School a ceremony was held by the Fallen Warriors Veterans Memorial Committee for Joe and fellow veteran, Bryan Hall. The group works to preserve the memories of late soldiers at their high schools. A plaque was presented to the family and now graces the wall of the Elk Grove High School near the main entrance. Among the many speakers at the ceremony was Joe's mom, Leigh Nurre, who read an excerpt from a letter to his parents in the event of his death in combat.
Above the plaques of Nurre and Hall is a third plaque bearing a quote from Shakespeare's "Henry The Fifth." The playwright united them as brothers. "We few, we happy few, we band of brothers. For he today who sheds his blood with me shall be my brother," the famous line reads. We are forever grateful for his sacrifice for us and his country. - Information from various articles in the Elk Grove Citizen, May 2nd and 14th, 2010
