About | Jesse started milking cows as early as grammar school to support his family dairy. When his brother enlisted in WW II, Jesse was designated as sole family support and wasn't allowed to join him. As result of his responsibilities, he never finished high school (Class of 1938). It is then with much pride and unknown to regular students that he completed his adult education classes and with nineteen others and thirty-three years later, obtained his EG High School diploma as a member of the Class of 1971. Here is his story: Mr. Silveira (89) was born May 9, 1920 in Chico, California to John Jesse Silveira of Azores Islands and Clare Grace Vincent of Crockett. He grew up in Woodland and then Marin County where he met his future wife, Loraine. The couple lived briefly in Woodland and Galt before settling in Elk Grove, first on the Ira Jones ranch on Stockton Boulevard, then later on Calvine Road, Sheldon Road, Emily Street, and Park Plaza Drive," we just lived all over town," recalled his wife Loraine. Their three children all graduated from Elk Grove High School; Louis ('67), Janie ('69) and John ('75). Mr. Silveira was a retired farmer and operating engineer; a charter member of the Knights of Columbus No. 7241, St. Josephs Catholic Church; S.E.S. Council No. 76, Elk Grove; Cabrillo Civic Club No. 26, Woodland; Sacramento Portuguese Historical and Cultural Society; Elk Grove Historical Society; and a 54- year member of Operating Engineer Local No. 3, Sacramento. As an operating engineer he worked on all the freeways in Sacramento as well as many other roads and dams across California. His family said he was extremely proud of being Portuguese, a dairyman, farmer, and raiser, breeder, and trainer of both saddle and draft horses. Mr. Silveira was preceded in death by daughter Jane Ann (Class of 69), grandson Mathew, and brother John (Jack). He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Loraine of Elk Grove; sons Louis and wife Sherri of Sacramento and John of Galt; grandchildren Joshua of Sacramento and Jennifer of Ventura; and sister Lorraine of Phoenix, Arizona. A Mass was held at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Elk Grove and interment was at St. Mary's Cemetery in Sacramento. - Information was from the Elk Grove Citizen and Sacramento Bee. |
