About	Earl died in an accidental (Boeing CH-46A Chinook - Tail No. 66-19023) helicopter crash while stationed in Germany. The crash occurred when elements of the Heavy Mortar Platoon, Headquarters Company (HHC), 2nd Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, were being transported from Ludwigsburg to Grafenwoel for live fire training exercises. Enroute at 0940 hrs, the aft rotor system malfunctioned and the helicopter crashed in a hayfield near Pegnitz and exploded, killing all 37 soles on board.
