About | Ouida, along time resident of Elk grove and member of a pioneer family passed on at the age of 99. She was born April 2, 1910 at Wallace Ranch in Yolo County to Roy and Della Lovdal. She graduated from EGHS in 1929 and lived with her grandfather, Delbert Cann on Elk Grove Boulevard, at that time. He was the constable and first fire chief in Elk Grove. In 1943 she volunteered in the Woman's Army Corps (WAC), one of the first (one of two woman) in Sacramento to do so. Following basic training she was selected to go to Australia. She served in the 52nd Hundred Woman's Army Corps Detachment, under General Douglas McArthur in the Philippines, and received two battle stars and three Presidential Citations with Oak Leaf Clusters for performance under combat conditions. She retired from the Sacramento Army Depot in 1971 following 20 years of service. While there, she was presented with the National Service Award in Washington, DC for her contribution in the Cost Reduction Program. Her family said she was most proud of her military service, and was a strong supporter of the disabled American veterans. Mrs. Hanks was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Hanks; daughter Barbara McDaniel (for whom the Western Festival Sweepstakes award is named); brothers Delbert and Roy Lovdal, sister Juanita Flannery and grandson Ron Haight. She is survived by her daughter Betty Fay of Livermore; grandsons Murray McDaniel and wife Carol of Elk Grove, Richard Haight of Utah and Randy Haight of Sacramento; granddaughter Suzan Cordoza of Livermore; five great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
