About My brother Ric passed away last night at the age of 76. He had a stroke last June and was getting better then had another stroke on Friday night and it was a bad one. He lived in Grove, Oklahoma with wife Judy. We are going back to the funeral we think will be on Saturday (Mar 18th) but the family will make a final decision on the day tonight. - Information from brother Seth ('67)

Richard “Ric” D. Hoyt (1947-2023), of Grove, Oklahoma, passed away in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on March 12th. Ric was born on March 1, 1947, in Sacramento, California to Walter and Marian (Blair) Hoyt Jr. He attended Elk Grove High School, graduating with the class of 1964. He then attended California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, earning a degree in animal science.

Ric married his soulmate, Judy Ann Catlett, on July12, 1968, in Elk Grove. They eventually made their home in Burns, Oregon. Ric was a cattle rancher and became an icon in the cattle industry. He was past president of the American Shorthorn Association and proudly served on the boards of the National Cattleman’s Beef Association, as well as serving as past chairman of the Political Action Committee. He was a well-respected livestock judge and travelled all over the world, including Australia, Argentina, and Canada, just to name a few. He, with his brothers and sisters, were once the nation’s largest producer of registered Shorthorn cattle. Later in life, he purchased and ran Intermountain Livestock Auction yard in La Grande, Oregon.

He and Judy “retired” in 2017 and relocated to Grove, Oklahoma, where he obtained his relator license and worked with Solid Rock Realtors. In addition to extensive resume as a cattleman, he was a member of Elks Lodge and the Cowboy Junction Church in Vinita, Oklahoma. He was larger than life, not only in stature, but also in personality. He loved his family and was the “best Dad and Poppy in the world,” always just a phone call away when one of them needed his encyclopedic knowledge. If there where toddlers around, you can be sure Ric was carrying them around, explaining life’s mysteries to them. Ric made friends with everyone, forgot no one, and no matter where on earth he traveled, he was sure to run into someone he knew – it was uncanny.

Ric was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Jay and Bob, sister Ann Hoyt. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Judy; children Cyndilin Hoyt of Grove, Kendra Gillette and husband Sweeny of Vinita, Richard Hoyt Jr. and his wife Michelle, of Gainesville, NY, and Preston Hoyt and his wife Charissa of Rogers, Arizona; grandchildren, Payton, Madison, Ashley, Blair, Louis, Keisha, Casey, Sammy, Olivia, sterling, Mara, Richard III, Miranda, bailey, Anthony, Landien, Josh, and Brylen: great-grandchildren , Brynee, Faith, Jax, Willow, Jasper, Pepper, Iva, Haelyn, Tate, Sunnie, Emma, Violet, and Quin. He is also survived by his brothers, Blair (Jan), Seth (Barbara), Steve (Vickie), and Jeff (Robin), and sister Jana (Andy) Root; as well as many friends and extended family. - Information from the Western Livestock Journal (ISSN 0094-6710, USPS 678660) Greenwood Village, CO.
