About Anita Basquez Fong passed away peacefully at home on January 25, 2022, in Sacramento, CA. She was surrounded by her loving family. She fought a courageous battle with cancer.
Anita was born December 16, 1947, in Torrance, CA. She was known as “Annie” to family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Tony and Savina Basquez, brother Henry Basquez and sister Frances Nunez.
She graduated from Elk Grove High School in 1966. She worked for Blue Diamond Almond Growers for 47 years, shortly after graduation from high school, working in various departments. She retired in 2015 as a Quality Assurance Specialist. She enjoyed working at Blue Diamond Almond. Several of her siblings also worked there during the same time.
Anita is survived by Jerry Fong, her husband of 4 years; stepchildren Corina Fong (fiancé Dennis); Michele Carthen (Ted); Eric Fong (Julie); and Nicole Wermig (Deryck), and ten step grandchildren Taylor, Conner, Kiefer, Jaden, Brandon, Shaylyn, Cameron, Amira, Makaylen, and Jaserra.
She is survived by her sisters Cathy Nuno (Ralph) and Martha Naranjo (Arnold); brothers Tony Basquez Jr (Nellie), Johnny Basquez (Chris), Joey Basquez, George Basquez, Bobby Basquez (Dena) and Martin Basquez (Pat), many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She loved being a wife, stepmother, and step grandmother. After her marriage to Jerry, she would tell family and friends that she gained four adult children and ten grandchildren.
Anita was a loving, caring, and generous person to many who knew her. She enjoyed spending time with her family doing things together. She was a very thoughtful and considerate person. She would remember to call her family and close friends on their birthday to wish them a happy birthday. She took joy in doing that.
She was a great organizer of family events such as the annual Basquez Family picnic in June. She enjoyed cooking, baking, doing arts and crafts, embroidering, and making blankets for her family. She was well known for her famous pozole. She loved nurturing her indoor and outdoor plants. Her favorite music was country and the oldies; she loved dancing, especially Latin and line dancing. She would watch “The Waltons” and “Little House on the Prairie” while making her blankets and embroidering. She said it was reminiscent of her days growing up and doing chores with her siblings on the family ranch in Sacramento. She and Jerry enjoyed traveling to Mexico, Sedona, the Grand Canyon, Kauai, Las Vegas, Oregon, Washington, and San Diego. She also loved going on cruises to Mexico.
She was an active parishioner at St. Paul Catholic Church for over 40 years serving in various ministries and supporting the parish community. She was the Hospitality Ministry lead. She was an active member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court 172 at St Paul Catholic Church. She was the chairperson for their annual Halloween bake sale and the Fall Festival bake sale. She helped with the annual Knights of Columbus Crab Feed, Sunday morning breakfasts, annual Parish Fall Festival and Christmas Faire. If anyone needed help, she would be there.
She will be greatly missed by her husband, family, friends, and her dog Brittany. We will miss her warm, friendly smile, hearing her voice and laughter. Our loving and fond memories of her will forever be etched in our minds and hearts. A special thanks to the Kaiser Hospice Team for their compassionate care and the support they provided to Anita.
