It is with deep sadness and a broken heart that I share the news that Sheldon High School English teacher Kerri Flook has passed away from cancer.
If you know nothing else about Kerri, know she loved her students and her job passionately. After she received her original cancer diagnosis, I was shocked when she told me she planned to continue teaching through her treatments. Kerri taught as she underwent surgeries, radiation, and some of her chemo (until it made her sick to the point she had to take a break). And even when she was home on leave, she would check in on her students and the department, attend meetings via Zoom, and send lesson ideas to her teams. Teaching was perpetually energizing for her.
The selflessness exemplified in Kerri’s teaching carried over into all areas of her life, where her thoughts were invariably of others. When she shared her bucket list with me several months ago, the most important thing to her was making sure to hold a cancer walk and raise money for the American Cancer Society so research could be done into stage IV cancer--so that one less person (and their family) would have to face the pain of terminal cancer in the future.
This love for others continued until her final days. On my last visit to her, she wanted to make sure that Aaron and Mackenzie, her husband and daughter, were taken care of and supported. She asked about her classes and colleagues at Sheldon, sharing her joy about our impending arrivals (because there are always some in the English department!). She asked about my children, laughing at stories of their latest antics.
And this is what made Kerri so special. Time and again, people have shared stories of her generosity of spirit. Several years ago, when I received news at the lunch table that my grandmother was dying, Kerri jumped in right away, telling me she was going to take my 4th period class for the day, sending me on my way to San Francisco in time to see my grandmother one final time. There are countless similar stories that many of you have shared with me: how she ran an errand to help, reached out with a small gift, brought chocolate to the lunch table to share, gave a book recommendation, listened when that’s what was needed, and provided advice upon request.
Thank you to everyone who reached out to Kerri with words of support, donated money to her Bucket List or the American Cancer Society, sent her letters or video messages, and kept her in their prayers. I know it touched her heart to see how loved she was by her Sheldon family. While she may be gone from our lives, my greatest wish is that her impact will live on through her acts of generosity, her students, her family, and her friends.
The next time you connect with a student, read a book, or perform an act of kindness, keep a piece of the experience in your heart for Kerri.
With Gratitude and Love, Cherylyn
