About | Donald W. Schultz, 83, died on Aug. 4, 2020 of cancer at his daughter’s home in Herald. He was born on Dec. 9, 1936 at his family’s ranch in Point Pleasant in Sacramento County. He was raised on a dairy farm, helping with milking and hay making until he started his adult career. From 1955 to 1998, Donald worked for the California Department of Fish & Game as a tractor operator, with time spent in Fall River Mills and 19 years in Alturas after his retirement. Donald served three years in the U.S. Army, stationed in Okinawa, Japan as a military policeman/dog handler, winning first place in train fire and qualified as a marksman. Donald was a lifelong member of PITA (Pacific International Trapshooting Association), recording 182,000 targets shot and winning many trophy buckles and awards. He loved sharing his knowledge and shooting skills with everyone. He also loved hunting waterfowl and deer. Surviving him are his children, Rhonda Willis of Bend, Ore., Joanne (Lory) Watson of Herald and James (Dana) Schultz of Galt; grandkids, Amber, Breanna, Curtis, Hailey and Madison; great grandkids, Ian, Alexis, Dylan, Colin and R.J. He leaves many lifelong friends, especially shooting pals, and good friends at the Brass Rail in Alturas. Preceding him in death were his parents, Jacob and Ruth Schultz; siblings, June, Helen, Jacob, Lee, Dorothy, Cliff, Kenneth, Vernon and Jeff; and ex-wife Sharon. A private service will be held at a later date at the Point Pleasant Cemetery in Elk Grove, and committal will be private as he is interred next to his youngest brother Jeff.
