About Alfred Solorio, Age 86; passed away January 9, 2019; born and raised in Sacramento, CA, USAF, Major, Retired; Auditor for the Federal Government Former Knights of Columbus and Order of Daedalians member. Since our brother, Freddy, was 6-7 years old he was caught up in the dream of being a pilot. He would take 2 sticks and nail them together to simulate an airplane. He attended Elk Grove grammar school and graduated from Elk Grove High School. He never wavered from his dream of becoming a pilot. He enrolled at Sacramento Jr. College and worked as a bookkeeper to pay for his studies. He took all the required classes to enable him to attend the US Air Force Cadet Training Academy at Williams Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona. Upon completion, he graduated as a First Lieutenant and pilot of the then well-known F-86-Saber Jet. He was later assigned as the flight commander of the C-124 Globe-master, a huge cargo plane, and finally the first pilot of the K-B-50 mid-air re-fueler. On assignment to Wake Island, Fred took sick and was temporarily comatose. His commanding officer at the time insisted he exit the service as a result of his condition. Fred would not hear of it and contacted his Congressman from San Antonio, Texas, Henry Gonzalez with whose assistance he replanned his military career. Fred spent the next two years at the University of Omaha studying to become a military base auditor. He was assigned as base auditor in Florida, the position from which he retired. Fred logged more than 4,000 hours of flying time. After retiring from the Air Force, Fred went to work for the Pentagon and assigned the job of auditor for the Department of Defense and, subsequently, the Department of Reclamation and Indian Affairs. He ultimately retired from this position and resided in his hometown of Elk Grove with his beloved wife, Gloria. - Information from the Sacramento Bee
