Honored Military Alumni
James T. (Pete) COOPER Class of 1951
Army, 20+ Years Enlisted as a 16 year old Recruit, 22 June 49. Basic training at Camp Chaffee, AR. October 49, sailed, via troop transport from Seattle, WA. to Yokohoma, Japan. Hit a severe storm and many troops got sick - vomit all over the place. I a 16 year old army private barely avoided upchucking. Served 9 months in Beppu, Kyushu, Japan, with 19th infantry regiment, 24th Inf. Div. the first U.S. Division sent to Korea when that war began. Served 11 months as an infantry light machine gunner- G. Co. 19th Inf. Regt., 24th Inf. Div. Finished my 3 year enlistment, plus President Trumans year and returned home. Things causing me to leave home at 12 and get away at 14 were still there. I reenlisted and went to France to became a U.S. Army deep sea diver. ($5.00 per hour for every hour or fraction thereof for time in the suit/in water.I was an 18 year old Sgt. No diving and I transferred to the 16th Inf. Regt. 1st Inf. Div. in Schweinfurt, Germany. My C.O. suggested I apply for OCS. I did and Graduated Ft. Benning, GA. October 1955 as a 22 year old infantry 2d Lt. Wounds in Viet Nam, May 68, rendered my physically unfit for further army service. I retired at age 36, having served in Korea and Viet Nam wars as a combat infantryman with 21 years active army service, as a major in ABQ. NM.
