While serving in Vietnam with the 173rd Airborne, John and his platoon walked int an ambush on 3/3/67. After losing his point man and machine gunner, John moved forward to retrieve the machine gun and was wounded. He got up and retrieved the machine gun and started charging and firing upon the enemy. He took enemy fire so his men could retreat. He was soon mortally wounded. John was awarded the Bronze Star with a "V" for valor.l

John was inducted into the El Rancho Hall of Fame (along with the 26 other men who sacrificed their lives in Viet Nam) in October 2023.
