About Janet Stephanie Bethell

Janet was born blonde and blue-eyed in Placerville, Calif., on April 22, 1959 to Richard and Karen Bethell.
As a child she lived on the family's apple ranch, Mother Lode Orchards in Camino and attended Camino Union Elementary School.
Tall and slender, Janet played basketball at El Dorado High School graduating in 1978. She qualified for a college scholarship in basketball and continued to play through college. She graduated from the University of Reno, Nevada with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Art and a minor in journalism.
In 1983, Janet met her life partner, Arnold Gemmill, a master jeweler and Pit River Tribe member. He had four beautiful daughters that Janet loved as her own.
Janet worked as a graphic artist for the Fairfield newspaper and later moved back to Placerville to work for the Mountain Democrat. She returned to school to get a teaching degree and substituted throughout the county including a semester of art at Oakridge High School.
Janet and Arnold's home was in Pollock Pines and this is where they took in a grandson, Ashton, as their own.
Janet fought Ocular Melanoma since 2007 and spent her final days in the home of her stepmother, Arlene Bethell, surrounded by loving friends and family.
Janet is survived by her mother Karen Bye; daughters Angelique, Dawn, Idella, Hillery Gemmill and their families and countless grandchildren; son Ashton Gemmill; uncle W.D. Bethell; and brother Jeff Bethell and his family.
Memorial service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints, 4621 Pony Express Trail, Camino, Calif., on Saturday June 19, 2010 at 2 p.m.
