The community of Yakima lost another legend last week. Charles "Chuck" Rishor passed away last Thursday at home from natural causes. He was an incredibly brilliant Science teacher and Professor that specialized in Chemistry. He was Eisenhower's Science Department Chair for as long as anyone could remember until he retired in 2006. He was the epitome of a true lifelong learner. He was quick-witted, kind-hearted and a big part of many lives in our area. A large number of his students went on to medical professions via Eisenhower or YVC.
I was honored to have completed my September experience and student teaching with him. With his help I was able to leave my student teaching early to be hired at Eisenhower. His most famous quote was that "education is the sum total of all experiences". He believed that every student came to us with a set of experiences that we needed to build upon. He believed that education was happening at all times and that some of the most magical teaching moments came when you really weren't expecting it. He always had a curiosity item in the front of the room or somewhere in his Chem lab that students would ask about. He banked on our natural curiosity and would field questions when the students showed interest. He had a way of letting students learn without them really knowing it was the time to learn.
He was never a big fan of Admin. He always said that a good administrator was one that he rarely got to see. He always had a way of managing his portion of the school with tremendous respect from his students and peers. I know that he will always be remembered by most and I hope you had a chance to have crossed his path. If you never did get to meet him, I have a collection of stories that can be purchased for the price of one barley pop.
Remember that tomorrow is never guaranteed to us. We need to seize the opportunity of today.
