About IRVIN "MONK"'S OBITUARY
U.S. Veteran
Born in Olcott, New York, September 29, 1942, Irvin “Monk” Sonker ended his time on earth on June 2, 2023, in Selah, Washington.

He had lived in Selah for 47 years with his wife, Sunny, and his two boys, Ben and Jason.

Monk grew up in Ransomville, New York and joined the Marines right after high school. He excelled as a Marine and was able to choose his post out of basics. He became an Embassy Guard in Moscow, Russia and then in Vienna, Austria, where he met and married his wife, Sunny Murdock. This spring they marked their 55th anniversary. He finished his career in the Marines and used his education money to enroll at CWU. While Sunny taught school, he finished his education with a Masters of Education. Meanwhile, they had their sons, Ben (’69) and Jason (’73). He started teaching at Eisenhower High School in the 70’s and retired from teaching in 2000.

Monk was very active with his son’s sports, soccer, swimming, golf, and was active with Selah City government and the UU Church of Yakima.

Just before retiring, he had a second love of teaching skiing and was up at White Pass as much as possible. Monk loved people, teaching, and being busy. He lived a fantastic life.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Details to come.

Brookside Funeral Home is caring for the family. Memories and condolences may be shared at www.brooksidefuneral.com.
