Date of Passing Aug 25, 2022
About Our Dad, Glenn William Allen Edmison suddenly graduated to Heaven on August 15, 2022, at the age of 92. Glenn was born June 27, 1930, in Ellensburg, WA, the eldest of two children born to Theodore and Jewel (Morehead) Edmison.
In 1951 he married Katherine Augusta Swenson and together they undertook the challenging task of raising 5 beloved children: Shelley, Steven, Sheryl, Karalee, and Mark. They also shared 7 cherished grandchildren: Erica, Skyler, Kayla, Treya, Aliya, Joel and Theo and two wonderful great grandchildren: Braylon and Lincoln.
Dad was preceded in death by his first wife Kathy, his second wife Jacque and his granddaughter, Erica. He is survived by his dear friend Shirley, his much-loved sister Myrna, his dear niece and nephew, Davene and Dean, Dean's wife Jan and their children Katiy (Johel) and Daniel, and their grandchildren: Inara and Alice.
Dad came from a poor but hardworking Scottish/English pioneer family who came through Canada and settled in the Goldendale/Klickitat area. Their names are engraved on the monument in front of the Goldendale Courthouse. As a youngster, Dad rode his horse, Dolly, to the old Mabton School when he lived with his grandparents in Byron. He then attended Ellensburg Public Schools and graduated from Ellensburg High School in 1948.
He was licensed as a Journeyman Carpenter at the age of 18 and used those skills to pay his way through college. Dad's Mom was a one-room schoolhouse teacher, and she instilled a life-long love of learning in Dad. They both believed that education was the best way out of poverty and obscurity. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at Central Washington State College with a major in Industrial Arts and a specialty in Drafting. In 1970 he moved the family temporarily to Arizona while he went on to earn his Doctorate in Education at Arizona State University in 1973.
Dad started teaching 6th Grade at the old Barge-Lincoln Elementary School. He taught at Wilson Junior High, Eisenhower High School, Davis High School, and night classes at YVCC. In his later education career, he worked in Administration at Olympic CC, Central Oregon CC, and Highline CC. He then returned to the classroom teaching Industrial Arts at WSU, Morehead State University in Kentucky, and ended his 46-year teaching career training teachers at the University of Idaho, Boise Extension Center. Among other accolades, he was awarded a Distinguished Teacher Educator Award by the International Technology Ed. Assoc.
Dad also loved Scouting and the outdoors. He earned his Eagle Scout (with Palms) and both his sons, Steven and Mark are Eagle Scouts. He was elected to Scouting's Order of the Arrow, was Lodge Chief and Lodge Advisor in the Ft. Simcoe Council, Yakima, and was Director of Field Sports for many years at Camp Fife. Some of the best memories that we, his children have, are of the years we got to spend the summers in one of the Staff cabins at Camp Fife... what a wonderful 'forest world' to grow up in! One of Dad's favorite Scouting experiences was taking his troop to the National Scouting Jamboree in 1977. He also attended Woodbadge and was a Woodbadge Coach/Councilor. He served in various leadership positions in the Olympic Council, Shelton, WA, the Cal/Ore Council in Bend, Oregon, the OreIda Council in Boise, Idaho and the Crater Lake Council. He retired from Scouting after 55 years of service and was awarded one of Scouting's highest honors, the Silver Beaver.
In addition: Dad loved to read... especially science fiction and crime fiction; he had over 75,000 ancestors in his Genealogy library; loved music and was in the Living Care Choir; enjoyed Northwest history and traditional Native American lore, music and dancing; and his most recent hobby: Model Railroading. He was a NMRA member who often presented workshops and clinics. He earned the NMRA's Gold Spike Award and achievement awards in almost every category available. His last layout was literally a museum piece!
We moved Dad back to Yakima from Bend, Oregon three years ago, and we are so glad he was able to make such a big move. We will always treasure the extra time we got to spend with him.
You will be GREATLY missed by those of us still on earth... but enjoy heaven, Papa!
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Meyer Auditorium on the Terraces at Summitview campus (formally Living Care) on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at 3:00pm.
