John was born on January 6, 1956 and grew up in Edina, MN with his father, Albert (Jim), and mother, Borghild (Kay) and older sister, Joan. John had fond memories of time spent in Pequot Lakes with aunts, uncles, and cousins. John grew up at Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis and enjoyed summers as a camp counselor at Cathedral of the Pines in Lutsen. He was active in track in junior high and high school and also soccer in high school, and graduated from Edina West High School in 1974. He went to college at the University of MN where he continued playing soccer. He was an active member of SAE where he met and maintained lifelong friendships. John married Cheryl Bertelson in 1990. They lived in Minneapolis until 1999. They moved to Lakeville where they raised their three children, Brandon (28), Rachel (26), and Nicole (23). John was very proud of his children’s many talents and enjoyed their activities and successes. He enjoyed music, downhill skiing, and boating at the cabin. Upon reflection of family and friends, John’s mental cognition has been slowly declining for over a decade.
