About Me | I've been a full-time ceramic artist for the last 25 years, and a part-time musician. Music has given me the framework for my life. I fell in love with the sound of the trumpet at the age of 7. I hold a Master's in Trumpet Performance from Indiana University where I was privileged to be a student of William Adam. I am the only woman to have gotten a Master's degree from his studio. My goal was to become a member of a major orchestra in the US. I took 12 national auditions 1980 - 1984. I won 3 of those auditions, but was not hired - specifically given the reason that I was a woman. The prevailing attitude was that a woman could not handle the physical and mental demands of orchestral trumpet playing. I had a good run as a freelancer, and managed to support myself for about 10 years with pick-up jobs, occasional day-jobs, and my brass quintet gigs. And I kept up playing tpt as much as I could. Today I am a full-time studio potter, recently relocated from the Chicago Area to Northern Michigan. (Thank you, Covid). I have a nearly completed studio and a wonderful new wood fire kiln, designed and built with Donovan Palmquist. This is a large, 100 cu. ft. double chambered kiln, which requires a cooperative group of 3-6 potters/artists to fill and to fire. I am passionate about arts education for all, building creative community, and the importance of hand-made work. I belie...(read more) |
