| About Me | In 2004, while 27 years old and approximately six months pregnant with my second child, I found a lump in my left breast. I was not looking for it, but it jumped out to my attention while lathering with soap in the shower. While conducting my biopsy, I asked my surgeon for his professional opinion about it. He stated that he was “pretty confident” that it was a fibro adenoma, a benign tumor that is “common in women your age”. To everyone’s surprise, I was asked to return to the surgeon’s office a day or two later to be diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I was told to bring someone with me. My husband was out of state completing school and my mother is deceased, so my mother-in-law went with me. My surgeon said to me, “I’m so sorry and surprised to say that this turned out to be cancer”. Though I was somewhat prepared to hear this news, it was still hard to accept. My mother-in-law and I broke out in tears. My first thought was, “I have two babies to live for”. I had just delivered my daughter two months prior and also had my three year old son. I also could not fathom how this was happening to a 27 year old with no family history of Breast Cancer. Needless to say the road that followed would be a treacherous one. Following a lumpectomy, I began dose dense chemotherapy. That meant going for chemo every two weeks for six months. I had to be treated aggressively due to my age and the type of cancer that I had. My husband was at my side at each appointment to talk to me or just hold my hand while I slept. I did pretty well through chemo for the most part in comparison to stories I’ve heard from others. It was not, however, easy at all. After completing chemo, I began about three months of radiation. I was declared cancer free in September 2005. I have always given God credit for my healing. I know now that that credit was not genuine. I had not fully accepted Jesus Christ as my Savior at that time. I was not living a proper Christian life. I was giving credit to my husband for being my “rock” through everything. On December 27, 2007 that “rock” walked out on me and my children. I was devastated and broken. On Sunday, December 30, 2007, I attended church for the first time in many years. That day I vowed to make a change. I cannot say that is the actual day I was saved , but it was the beginning of the process. My sister-in-law said to me, “I cannot believe that cancer didn’t bring you to your knees and to God, but losing your husband did.” This really struck me. God called me to “stand” for the restoration of my marriage. This has not been an easy task. I can honestly say that I think the process of becoming the wife, mother, and woman that God wants me to be has been much tougher than my cancer treatment. I am so grateful for every second of it though. I have been blessed so immensely and am so excited about the quality of life me and my children are enjoying by relying on our Heavenly Father. We will continue standing on God's promises until the day my husband/their father is back home and walking with the Lord as well (no matter how long that takes)!! In the meantime, we live every second of our lives i...(read more) |
