About Me Gregory Hemby Biography Gregory Hemby has been a Washington, DC resident, since 1962, where at 10 years old his family moved from Hartford, Connecticut not to far from Mark Twain’s House (now a museum). His childhood was great and was raised by parents that raised him with a spiritual and work ethic. It took a while for him to get going, but has molded him into a fearless productive archetype of community advocacy he is today. His mother knew that the cultural change to Washington would be vivid and astonishing so, his parents decided together and by choice to live in public housing in Connecticut for two years prior to moving to DC and shortly after that settling in for 36 years on Capitol Hill where Mr. Hemby remains to have strong ties politically and socially. Mr. Hemby was instilled with a strong family foundation and values which has evolved as he now is a co-caretaker for his living parents in their home lives and personal affairs. Being educated in the DC Public School system graduating from Eastern Senior High School in 1970, afterward Mr. Hemby attended The Washington Technical Institute, The Federal City College, The University of the District of Columbia and Southeastern University where he majored in urban planning and accounting. In 1999 he returned to Southeastern University and academia after 26 years to major in legal studies and business administration and management. While at Southeastern University he served as vice-president of the Student Government Association. He also founded and started the Arts and Culture Club of SEU. Mr. Hemby has completed many career-orientated courses and seminars to enhance his development and cognitive skills, most rercemntly obtaining his paralegal certification at the Paralegal Institute of Washington, D.C. Mr. Hemby has been involved with notable organizations in the past including NAFEO and The Black Caucus and the United Planning Organization where his mentors Alfred D. Jones (emeritus) and Theresa Jones taught him the intricacies and values of volunteerism, social work and socialism in the citizenry and has inspired him to recently institute the processes of organizing his own non-profit, APOTS (A Part of the Solution). His many other mentors ans close associates have instilled in him an innate sense of the urgency for quality and diligence in everything you do and be all you can be and more and then some and never give up no matter what. Since 1982 Mr. Hemby has been active with political campaigns both national and local including campaigns of Walter Washington, Walter Fauntroy, Jesses Jackson, Marion Barry, Eddie Whittington, Bill Clinton, Anthony Williams, Yvette Alexander and Kwame Brown, respectively to add to his numerous volunteer activities since 1982. Mr. Hemby was involved with issues of social justice and change. He is an active member of NAMI DC (National Alliance of Mental Illness). Mr. Hemby is continually vigorous as an activist in his community east of the Anacostia River in Southeast Washington, D.C. does volunteer work for numerous civic and community causes for social justice and change including voter registration and education. Mr. Hemby testified twice (March 9. 2005 and in February 2008) at the Council of the District of Columbia Oversight Committee Hearings on the Department of Mental Health Budget and Spending and looks forward to again testifying at other hearing in the future on matter in the public’s interest. After Mr. Hemby’s children (two sons) were absconded from him years ago, it left him scared and devastated. A wedge was created between his sons and subsequent addictive behavior was apparent in ensued for years. He was very proud to see his second son graduate from college along with his parents in North Carolina. He is extremely proud of both his sons and loves them and has spiritually asked that they be blessed to carry on a generation of eminent lineage. From Connecticut and Washington where he was raised to Mississippi and North Carolina where his mother and father were raise respectively. In 2000, and then one after another, very close people in the life of Mr. Hemby went on the glory and sent Mr. Hemby spiraling into a manic depressive state and after relapse after relapse, treatment and continued therapy up to this day, his life and family relationships have flourished and has gotten much better into the recovery and now deliverance chapter and a renewed relationship with his family and sons though not perfect, but existing and continuously reaching out to them and living a life with precedence to God and family while still fighting and excepting his mother’s recent passing (2009), which bore a tremendous burden of pain that he deals with everyday. Mr. Hemby became homeless three times in his life after and as a result of these traumatic experiences he has not only learned from them, moreover, he has become an advocate for social justice and change as he himself experienced the social ills that are prevalent in today’s society and secular world and the stigmatism which comes along with the verity of one’s mental illness, homelessness or their socio-economic status to be condemnatory or judgmental because based on their way of a life’s privileges. These eminent experiences have helped mode Mr. Hemby him into what he spiritually feels is now his calling—to be a part of the solution to help people afflicted with some sort of mental and or co-occurring impairments that for some reason is not being addressed, and to encourage them to live and do positive things for themselves and inspire them despite prevailing circumstances to be motivated. Mr. Hemby is active in his church and is currently on a personal project utilizing his writing skills to write music for the glory of God and has started writing his own autobiography which he is two years into. He has been a member of a church choirs, public relations committees, land eading a prison ministry committee. Transitioning from Jehovah’s Witnesses as a child, to Islam, to Baptist, to Episcopal and now non-denomiation church as his undergird, where his ministry and journey is and will continue to support “The Church Without Walls Ministry at the New Mount Olive Baptist Church in NorthEast Washington, DC where his DC childhood friend and neighbor, The Rev. Dr. Luke Mitchell, Jr., teaches his relentless calling for faith and salvation while his active current ministry called the Temple Keeper’s Ministry as the church Sexton, he oversees his church’s domestic and maintenance tasks under the leadership of his Pastor the Rev. Dr. William Benneytt. Mr. Hemby is stimulated to be a part of this crusade of making people in the world realize salvation and that “they are the church” (Church Without Walls). Striving for good success in every single thing you do is the as mentored by another DC childhood friend and neighbor, The Rev. Dr. William H. Bennett, II in his “Good Success Ministries” where Mr. Hemby also receives his spiritual guidance. Mr. Hemby’s career background as a paralegal and administrative law clerk from sorted law firms and civil rights practitioners, has benefited him educationally from these legal experiences and continues to keep skilled and up with the legal environment up to this day. Mr. Hemby has had multiple work experiences to support him in his life which he deems as an advantage to not only his calling, but in personal development. Mr. Hemby received his Paralegal Certification in March 2010 and received his Food Handler Certification in August 2011 and pasted the Federal Hood Certification Examination qualifying him to receive a state Department of Health ID allowing him to inspect and enforce improper health situations. Having been diagnosed with bipolar disorder years ago, Mr. Hemby has learned the power of peer support, therapy, counseling, adhering to a medication regiment and having a life plan as well as a recovery plan. He also has challenged doctors and their medications as to its effectiveness. Even though Mr. Hemby suffers from other physical challenges, he has helped and continue to help others with his social and civic activism as he was helped and is a firm believer who feels that psycho-social issues can be addressed not only in a clinical setting, but in non-traditional clinical settings also. Mr. Hemby spiritually and humanistic feels that the human resolve to persevere exists profoundly and lies within the layers of the untapped potential that when ignited will be the catalyst for a breakthrough to move higher and forward regardless of circumstances. He is currently the Co-Field Director of candidate Bill Bennett for the Ward 7 City Council seat in Washington, D.C. Mr. Hemby’s precedence is God and family which he use...(read more)
