Alan John Zink

Mar 19, 1945 -

Sep 12, 2023

Alan John Zink, age 78, died in Anchorage, Alaska, on Sept. 12, 2023, from ALS - Lou Gehrig's disease. He was diagnosed a year ago and, despite knowing the difficult progression of the disease that he faced, he remained steadfast in his faith in Christ and in his conviction that his eternal home was in Heaven.

Al was born on March 19,1945, in Detroit, Mich. He joined the Navy out of high school. After the Navy he worked at Sears as an appliance repairman and lived a life of chaos and brokenness. Al's turning point in life came after a desperate plea to a God his brother, Phil, had told him about. That night after his prayer, he awoke to a room full of light and an invisible hand on his chest. He told the story often of how the hand drew out all the pain and brokenness of his entire life. In his words, "It felt like every cell in my body was shimmering with light." The light and hand went away but from that moment until the day he died he was faithful to Christ and looked forward to the day when he would meet Him in person and feel that joy and peace again. He called it his personal transfiguration.

Al moved to Alaska in 1977 and met Rosalie Kejr. They were married on June 5, 1982. Al and Rosalie raised three daughters in the heart of the Saint John Orthodox community in Eagle River. Al worked as owner and operator of Al's Appliance Repair. He was an avid outdoorsman. It was a joke among anyone who survived an outdoor adventure with him that he operated "Al's Torture Charters." Those who spent time with him knew him to be a great storyteller of his wild adventures. His most unbelievable stories began with, "Now keep in mind this was before I became a Christian." After the death of his wife in 2000, he found his second love, golf. After retirement he became a snowbird, spending his winters on the golf courses in Tucson, Ariz., and his summers in Alaska.

Al was preceded in death by his wife, Rosalie; and his brother, Philip. He is survived by his brother, Daryl; and his three daughters, Mary Ruth (Marshall) Alexander, Rebecca (Michael) Griffith and Martha (Sean) Fisher. He has eight grandchildren and one more, Baby Alexander, due to arrive next week, whom he had hoped to meet. The funeral was held on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2023, at St. John Orthodox Cathedral.
