I met Deloris while we were both in kindergarten at Jefferson School. I lived on Oregon Street near King Street & she lived on King Street down near Lake. I would visit her at her house. She never came to mine. Her home was a lot more interesting than mine.
At Dorrie's house there were always lots of people coming & going, adults. There was no lawn around the exterior of the big wood frame house, which allowed hours of very active play. And there were dogs.
Dorrie's grandmother (or aunt, or grown up cousin) could braid her hair in the neatest, most stylish arrangements I had ever seen. Dorrie's hair was past her waist & lent itself to pig tails of every design. & she had bangs with a little curl "right in the middle of her forehead." She was adorable. She could have gotten rich with her braiding skills these days.
Once in first grade, the teacher asked the class to tell about someone's having a birthday that day or the next. No one responded until Dorrie held up her hand & said, "Brother's birthday is tomorrow."
The teacher snapped at her & said, "I am talking about someone in this class."
Dorrie was embarrassed. I never heard her speak out in class again all year.
In high school she went another way from mine. She enjoyed 4H & became Future Farmers Queen in '61. I loved her always.
She cut her hair & moved away.
