About	Blackwell was well known by the DHS class of 1967 as he was the manager of both the football and the basketball teams. He also worked on the school newspaper. He had a big voice, big ideas, and a big personality. After high school he finally found his place at Appalachian U. in Boone. With his father's encouragement, he went on to get a law degree from UNC-CH. He worked many years as legal council with the NC Real Estate Commission and then worked for Elaine Marshall at the Securities Division. He was so proud of his son John Brogden who graduated from law school in Arkansas in 2016. Black had ongoing health problems coming from his spinal column; but, surgeries and physical therapy were helping with those issues. Suddenly, in Feb., 2016, he had symptoms of abdominal pain and was admitted to WakeMed. Tests showed a large tumor at the pancreases which was blocking the bile duct. Complications developed and he passed over peacefully during the night of 2/21/16. A dear friend, his mother, two sisters and his wife, Deborah Brogden, were with him.
