About	La Plata County native Scott Brendan Slade died in San Diego on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008. He was 45. Mr. Slade had battled a spinal-cord infection that left him a quadriplegic since January 2007. He was born to Gilbert and Elaine Slade in Durango on May 8, 1963. He grew up on the family ranch 18 miles southwest of Durango. Mr. Slade attended Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary, Miller Junior High and Durango High schools. He was a member of the first class to graduate from the new Durango High School. He loved to golf, a sport he learned from his grandparents at a young age. His family said he excelled in his education and attended Colorado College in Colorado Springs on a golf scholarship. Mr. Slade earned a Master of Business Administration from the Thunderbird School of International Management (now the Thunderbird School of Global Management). After graduation, he moved to Los Angeles, where he worked for companies such as LA Gear, Red Bull, Hype and Met-Rex. He spoke four languages fluently. Through his work, Mr. Slade lived in France and Mexico. He was also able to travel the world, where he learned to cook a wide variety of dishes. He enjoyed cooking and entertaining friends and family. They said no one ever left his home hungry. In October 2003, he married Kathy Heltman in San Diego, and the couple made their home there. "Scott will be remembered as a courageous, loving, patient man who lived life to its fullest," his family wrote, "and always turned adversity into something positive. His twin girls were born two days after he became ill, and although he was never able to hold his children, this past year he spent every possible moment with them, laughing, talking and having tea parties." Mr. Slade is survived by his wife, Kathy Slade, of San Diego; daughters Samantha Slade and Stephanie Slade, both of San Diego; parents, Gilbert and Elaine Slade, of Durango; and sister, Erin Aas, of Houston. A service was held Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008, at San Rafael Parish in San Diego.
